It’s always good to start your bonding journey when your little friend is still young. It’s obvious that the more time a person spends with their birds, the more comfortable and friendly they get.

You must spend quality time with your parakeet every single day, and this deepens his trust towards you : a habit that will reward you his love in return. Note that parakeets are always looking for true companionship and attention.

Again, what you sow is what you reap.

The more attention you give to them right from the beginning, the more attention they will want from you.

Seeing From A Parakeet’s Viewpoint

It might feel annoying to see your parakeet’s out of fear response as you start approaching them. But you must understand that this is completely normal.

As he doesn’t know you much or had little to no interaction with you, he would want to protect himself from any unfavorable condition. One main reason behind this behavior is you appear bigger than his fellow little friends.

Hence they see you as a danger, not a friend. Be patient in such cases. Your favourite bird might need some time to understand your behavior and see you as a dear friend.

Anti Chaotic Environment

Realise that it’s about you and your pet. You must give two of you ample time before you know and trust each other. This requires you to keep your room free from other people or pets or this will make your little pal way too uncomfortable and intimidated.

Make sure to place his nest in a chaos free room, where he feels safe. This will help you spend a lot of quality time with him. This bonding is a gradual process and needs some time. But the rewards await on the other side as the trust and bond deepens with time.

Soon he will start to recognise you as a friendly companion to be with, making the bond stronger and everlasting.

Slow But Steady

Expecting your little friend to exit their cage and sit on your fingers right from the beginning might seem unrealistic, but don’t lose hope. Understand that the initial step must be to give him enough time and space to feel comfortable.

Once he realises you’re not a threat, you will lay the foundation for a strong bond. You can spend some time sitting next to his cage and enjoying his presence. Read books, do your work, watch shows.

But don’t forget to treat him gently and calmly while feeding him. It’s not a smart move to scream or react inappropriately.

Remember, your one wrong move can make him panic. He will eventually gain your trust.

Process Of Bonding

The more interaction you allow between you and your little pet, the better the friendship gets. Also, this makes him more confident in his interaction.

Let him get used to your presence and touch while changing his food and water. You can also offer him perch and eventually your finger. Once he realises your touch is safe, you’ll soon gain his trust.

As he gains confidence and you ensure his safety and security in the room, it’s time you take him out of his little cage perched on your finger.  But don’t try to chase him while he is flying. You need to have patience.

Give him all the time he needs to move around the room.Stay prepared for the mess he might create as it’s natural for birds to excrete spontaneously.

This bonding process starts slow but ends up being highly rewarding.

Being Aware Of Biting Habit

Your parakeet, being a bird, has a slightly different perspective, which needs to be understood. The biting attempt of your little friend might not necessarily be out of aggression, but a chewing habit.

You can help resolve this issue by providing him toys to bite on. Note that parakeets don’t necessarily bite unless they feel intimidated.

One main reason behind this can be his unfamiliarity with you. You may have to give him more time to understand you and enjoy your presence. Moreover, it might not feel natural for a bird to be in your hand.

Even if he attempts to bite, understand the situation and be calm. You should never react in a loud or aggressive manner. That will only worsen the situation and lower his trust on you.

Offer Them Their Favourite Treat

Know what your parakeet likes to eat the most. If you can offer him the treat he enjoys, you are more likely to win his heart. But remember to keep his diet healthy and avoid giving too many treats.

Frequent Talks

Try to spend more time talking to your dear pet.Whenever you walk towards his habitat, spend a few minutes talking to your parakeet.

Once the bird recognises your phrases, he might repeat. This increases your chances of gaining his trust. Cleaning His Home

A clean cage for your parakeet ensures least exposure and better health. Make sure to clean their cage regularly.

Safety Precautions

Make sure your parakeet stays inside the cage when you’re doing activities like cooking or lighting a candle. Keep all the chemicals, sprays and strong scents out of their reach. Make sure the doors and windows are closed when your buddy is out of his cage.

And keep other pets away from him. Bonding with a parakeet may seem a time consuming attempt, but you will definitely love it.

The more you understand and interact with him, the better the bond gets. Treat him like a family member and spend enough time knowing him.

A deep, loving bond will naturally follow.
